• Two Mackillop Farm Management Group trials were sown to evaluate two BYDV management options across four wheat varieties.
• High Rainfall zone growers should be pro-active and develop a BYDV management plan.
• Up to date disease guides should be consulted when selecting varieties.
• Growers are encouraged to check for aphids regularly, especially early in the season.

The treatments resulted in no difference in yield, protein or oil content at Millicent.

There are no NVT Canola sites in the lower South East and MFMG growers identified that it was important to evaluate canola varieties in the high rainfall zone of the South East. 

The long season winter canola varieties require a vernalisation period (cold requirement) before they become reproductive and
bud elongation starts to occur. This gives these varieties the ability to be sown early and then grazed without significantly affecting
grain yields. In 2016, three winter canola varieties were sown at Conmurra. They were sown at the same time as the spring sown
canola variety trials, and as a result, their full yield potential has not been achieved (Table 3). To try and maximise the benefits,
need to be prepared to sow early. There was no significant difference in yield between the three varieties sown.

• MFMG funded variety trials at Conmurra and Millicent on high yield potential wheat and barley lines.
• Released cultivars and experimental lines were evaluated.
• This trial provided growers the opportunity to increase their knowledge on the management and performance of high yield potential wheat and barley varieties for the high rainfall zone (HRZ).
• Trial planning for 2018 is underway focusing on elite lines.

• Trial work in other states suggests plant growth regulators (PGR’s) can manipulate plant architecture in early sown cereal crops.
• MFMG funded PGR trials at Conmurra and Millicent on wheat and barley.
• The application of PGR’s on wheat increased yield overall at Conmurra, but did not alter plant architecture, flowering or grain quality.
• This trial provided growers the opportunity to increase their knowledge on the use of PGR’s.

No grain yield or quality differences for the dual purpose wheat Manning were observed at Millicent with additional N and S treatments.

 With four distinctly different seasons, the results reiterate the importance of reviewing long-term data when making varietal choices.

• MFMG and SARDI funded a wheat nutrition (Granular vs. Liquid) scoping study at three sites (Sherwood, Frances and Conmurra).
• The aim was to evaluate wheat production with either granular or liquid fertiliser inputs.
• Planning is underway to expand this study in 2019 and an application for additional funding submitted.

The Sherwood trial (Table 2) benefited from a long growing season and mild spring conditions with the mid-late maturing variety Trojan being the highest yielding variety (6.91 t/ha). Beckhom and Scepter followed closely (6.78 t/ha and 6.73 t/ha respectively). Both of these mid-season varieties also performed in the best at Sherwood in 2015, demonstrating their ability to perform in this environment under different seasonal conditions.

• MFMG funded variety trials at Sherwood and Frances to enable growers to evaluate a selected number of varieties under specific local conditions. 
• Varieties included released cultivars and experimental lines. 
• At Sherwood, the AH varieties Scepter (5.59 t/ha), Vixen (2018 release; 5.56 t/ha) and RockStar (2019 release; 5.33 t/ha) were the highest yielding. 
• At Frances, Scepter (7.23 t/ha), recent releases Vixen (7.12 t/ha), RockStar (7.02 t/ha) and Sheriff CL Plus (6.63 t/ha) and the experimental line LPB15-2485* (6.47 t/ha) were the highest yielding. 
• At both sites, some AH varieties failed to reach the minimum protein level required to achieve maximum grade. 

On heavier soil types with higher levels of organic matter, using a speed tiller to incorporate a wheat stubble may assist in increasing canola yields. If incorporation occurs immediately post-harvest, then the addition of nitrogen may not be required if the soil nitrogen levels are adequate. If incorporation is delayed and occurs immediately prior to sowing, then the addition of nitrogen should be considered.

Crop topping timing and delayed harvest timing can reduce faba bean seed quality.
 

• Ryegrass is an increasingly significant weed in the SE of SA and Western Victoria due resistance to major knockdown, pre emergent and post emergent herbicide chemistries.
• As resistance develops to post emergent chemistry, pre emergent chemistry becomes increasingly important in managing resistant ryegrass.
• Knowing the resistance status of weeds within a paddock allows for the most cost effective herbicide to be applied....the most expensive herbicide is the one that doesn’t work.
• Incorporating alternative herbicide modes of action can improve ryegrass control especially where the presence of Group D resistant ryegrass is suspected or known.

• Varieties responded similarly in yield and many quality measurements to applied N, but showed differences in protein levels.
• New higher yielding durum varieties required more N to reach target protein of 13%
• The later application of N at GS47 was the most effective to achieve 13% protein

• The influence of nitrogen on grain yield and protein depends on the amount of fertilizer applied, the timing and the growing season.
• Fertilising to increase grain protein is profitable if farmers are being paid a premiums for protein above 10.5 -11%.

• Mitika, Possum and Potoroo have been high yielding oat varieties, Wandering produced high yields in 2009 but has some disease issues that may affect yield in other years.

When making oat varietal decisions, it is important to consider various factors. These include the environmental suitability, end use (milling, feed grain, grain and graze or hay production) and likelihood that the required grade/quality will be achieved, potential disease issues (both root and foliar leaf diseases) and yield potential.

• Newer milling varieties Bannister and Williams provide a unique fit in the system, having hay yields similar to those of conventional hay varieties, while providing high yielding milling quality grain.
• Hay quality was measured at Frances, and although there was no significant difference in hay production (t/ha) between varieties, there was a significant difference in hay quality.
• NVT site mean yields were well below average, and so long-term predicted yields along with disease profiles should be utilised when making varietal decisions.

• Crop productivity on infertile sandy soils can be greatly improved by incorporating organic matter deep into the soil (>30 cm).
• In some cases, crop yields are further boosted with the incorporation of clay and/or fertiliser to depth.
• Two years of recent research show that the best soil modification treatments can increase crop yields by 70 to 200 %, even in challenging seasons.
• Treatments that address multiple constraints in these soils provide greater benefit than those addressing individual issues.

• Contrary to expectations Russian Wheat Aphid pressure in Southern Australian cereal production seems low over the last years (2017, 2018). Dry and hot summer conditions seem to reduce green bridge survival of Russian Wheat Aphids.
• Barley grass and Brome grasses are major hosts (van Helden 2018) supporting RWA survival over summer. Their development will strongly depend on summer rainfall.
• Development of regional economic thresholds are in progress at trial sites throughout South Australia,Victoria, Tasmania, and New South Wales. Use of international thresholds are still advised until Australian thresholds are developed.
• Observations suggest that crop infestations occur in autumn on early growth stages, then persist over winter and can build up in spring, especially when plants are drought stressed.

Sowing feed into dwindling lucerne stands; either barley or the newer forage ryecorn varieties resulted in increased weight gains of lambs when compared with those lucerne stands where annual grasses were becoming more dominant allowing lambs to be finished quicker prior to the onset of grass seeds
• Oversowing with Scope CL provides a flexible option in the grazing system with the ability to graze for feed in a seed free environment, or to lock up for grain if seasonal conditions are favourable 
• Heavy stocking rates (and possibly small paddocks or strip grazing methods) are needed to keep newer
forage ryecorn varieties grazed down to maintain feed quality and maximise grazing benefits.

• LRPB Beaufort and LRPB Trojan matched the 2017 season best to deliver the highest yield
• Revenue made good use of late rains and had the highest yield of the later maturing lines
• Even with fungicide support Septoria resistance at the LRPB Trojan (MS) level is important to keep pressure down in the upper canopy late in the season
• A number of breeding lines with later maturity, AH quality and Septoria resistance have been selected from this work for further development in 2018.

• Genetic mutations in the Septoria tritici blotch (STB) pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici can differentially influence the performance of triazole fungicides in the laboratory.
• There should continue to be a focus on the principles of an integrated disease management (IDM) approach to control diseases such as STB, using rotation, cultivar resistance, later sowing, and other aspects of cultural control to compliment fungicide control.
• New research on foliar fungicide indicates that the principal fungicides still give good in-field control of STB up to 30 days after application when applied at full label rates.
• There are significant differences in disease control amongst the different fungicide products and rates of application when monitored leaves are assessed more than 30 days after application.
• Single spray timings of foliar fungicide for control of STB made during the late tillering phase gave less effective disease control than applications made at first node (GS31). Spray application delayed until flag leaf gave the poorest control of STB but gave superior leaf rust control later in the season.

 • Reduced sensitivity of the Septoria tritici blotch (STB) pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici to triazole fungicides is likely to be an increasing problem, following the discovery of more resistant biotypes (R8 strain or Isoform 11) on the mainland in 2016.
• The presence of this strain and its proportion in the population will influence disease management strategies differentially.
• In Tasmania, early season disease control in the field with flutriafol (2017 trials) and tebuconazole (2016 trials) has been reduced by the more resistant biotypes of the pathogen, whilst on the mainland trial sites the activity of flutriafol appears to have been maintained in 2017 for the control of STB.
• The performance of a new SDHI based seed treatment and to a lesser extent fluquinconazole (Jockey) has been better than flutriafol in Tasmanian trials.
• Triazole/strobilurin mixtures based on epoxiconazole and azoxystrobin (e.g. Radial, Tazer Xpert), along with new as yet unregistered combinations of triazole & SDHI have given excellent control of STB.
• In 2016 the advantage of these products was evident in disease control and yield response in wheat but in 2017 the yield response to these products was similar to that observed with Opus and Prosaro (registered in wheat but not registered for STB control).
• Single spray timings of foliar fungicide for control of STB made during the tillering phase gave less effective disease control than applications made between GS31 – GS39.
• The most effective control of STB on a canopy leaf layer is achieved by applying fungicide to that leaf shortly after it has fully emerged but before infection becomes established.
• Where more than one fungicide is used in wheat avoid using the same triazole active ingredient twice in a season, irrespective of diseases to be controlled. If it is not possible ensure it is mixed with another mode of action (strobilurin) at one of the timings.
• Since strobilurins are at higher risk of resistance avoid using products containing these active ingredients more than once in a season.

• Overall the efficacy of pre-emergent herbicide control of ARG increased with increasing water rates. This was particularly the case with Sakura, supporting the results from Western Australia.
• There was no significant difference between weed control treatments (both between and within herbicide treatments) on end grain yield.
• This trial experienced extremely dry conditions throughout the season, as such grain yield was limited.

The idea behind this is to highlight and show some of the everyday activities that result in dual benefits both to the business and environment, and that farmers are good resource managers.

• Sapding or delving in lime lifted the soil pH to a depth of 20cm within one year.
• All other results are inconclusive at this stage; this may be due to seasonal conditions and/or crop variety.

• Industrial hemp shows potential as a summer irrigated rotation crop
• Shallow sowing (10-20 mm depth) is key to successful emergence and establishment
• High plant density (>75 plants/m2) allows hemp plants to outcompete co-germinating weeds

• Water salinity above approximately 1500 ppm (2.7 dS/m) causes leaf burn and death of young plants

• Varieties still being evaluated for suitability to Riverland and Limestone Coast regions

Two NVT barley trials were sown in the South Eeast (SE) region of South Australia (SA) in 2018. The Keith trial was
sown on the 16th May and the Bordertown trial site was sown on the 6th June. Long term yield performance (2014
– 2018) from the trial sites are shown in Tables 1 and 2. Both sites experienced frost conditions and extreme heat
conditions throughout the flowering period. Interpret results with caution.

◊ For tined seeders, reduce stubble load by mulching, incorporation + nutrients, baling, grazing and consider sowing at 15-19 degree angle to previous sown row
• If stubbles are too thick to sow through, consider strategic late burn, especially before 2nd wheat crop or if sowing canola into large stubbles
• Early monitoring is essential to see how effective actions are to allow for re-planning

• When dealing with annual ryegrass populations, it is a numbers game; the more you can control the better.
• Higher water rates in retained stubble resulted in increased efficacy of pre-emergent herbicides.
• Initial findings suggest that using speedtillers to retain stubble in the system does not result in any negative effects

• Select crops best adapted to the soil and climatic conditions of your region; faba bean is the pulse crop best adapted to soils prone to waterlogging.
• Avoid soils with acidic subsurface layers and/or shallow topsoil that limit root development and impermeable subsoil that restrict drainage.
• Test soil pH at 5cm intervals to a depth of 20 cm, to detect subsurface acidity.
• Select paddocks at least two years before sowing acid-sensitive crops to allow time for applied lime to react and increase soil pH, if required.
• Sow early in the recommended sowing window for your location, to encourage effective nodulation, early vigour and biomass accumulation before the onset of cold, wet conditions.

Spading alone and the addition of more clay did not appear to increase growth in this year. This would suggest that non-wetting and soil compaction were not major constraints affecting this site. The incorporation of organic matter combined with clay did, however, provide large increases to both dry matter and yield. The incorporation of organic matter provides a large nutrient benefit, particularly nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. However, nutrients applied by the landholder should have been adequate to meet the yields delivered. Clay addition would have provided more than enough potassium.

• Blackleg internal infection was found to be greater in retained seed compared to the original hybrid.
• Some trials showed a yield loss when retained sowing seed was used.
• The use of farmer retained hybrid seed must be questioned based on these and other trial results.

• Growers should utilise the tools, knowledge and rule of thumb guidelines for growing irrigated canola, accessible on the GRDC website.
•  The correct variety should be sown at the correct time for maximum yield potential.
• Be prepared to sow early in a suitable paddock, knowing that seasonal conditions can dictate the success of dual purpose crops.
•  Recovery and winter growth of canola is slower than cereals.
•  Don’t graze too early (wait until the 6–8 leaf stage) and lock up before bud elongation is >10 cm.

Maturity of wheat varieties and their associated phenological traits need to be considered when making decisions about
variety selection and seeding programs. The correct combination is required to achieve yield potentials across different seasonal
conditions. In seasons with an early break or situations which require early feed, winter wheat varieties have shown the ability to mature, provided they are sown early. High rainfall zone growers should be aware of disease pressures when sowing early.
If sowing later, mid-maturity spring wheats that have a moderate vernalisation and moderate photoperiod requirement have out-performed the early maturing varieties with weak vernalisation and weak photoperiod, regardless of the spring finish.
